16th Annual National Cartoonists Society Reuben Awards Program

The cover by the one and only Willard Mullin.

Here are some highlights from the 50 year old 16th Annual Reuben Awards of the National Cartoonists Society Program, which was held at the Astor Hotel in New York City on April 23, 1962.

Some great caricatures which, I believe, are drawn by an uncredited Willard Mullin.

The below gatefold shows us the Reuben Awards menu, and the beginning of the ads for the program. Many cartoonists and syndicates pay for pages to help defray the costs of the Awards evening -- a tradition the continues today. Here's Al Smith with MUTT AND JEFF.

Harold Gray and ANNIE:

Toni Mendez was an agent to many cartoonists. Here's Al Jaffee drawing a page for her. I met her several times and I don't think there was a time when she wasn't wearing a hat!
